Bansko Off Piste

Bansko Off Piste

Further into the season with more fresh powder I have been able to explore more Bansko off piste with my snowboard. There was a fairly big avalanche in the area area between the Todorka and Shiligarnik chair lifts 2 days ago.  A large slab of snow about 70cm deep broke away and the upper lifts were subsequently closed for about an hour,  so I proceeded with caution.

To the left of Todorka I had a quick lap of the powder above Plato:

After another hike up past the radio mast on Todorka I headed down to the right in awesome powder. Most of the previous tracks have traversed further around the mountain so I laid down some freshies of my own before heading in the same direction. Here I found a steep gully that had a small avalanche (see below).

There are several different chutes to choose between which were great fun. Hopefully I will get another chance to lay some fresh tracks and if so will take the GoPro out. There are not really any escape routes though and the chutes get thinner so care needs to be taken not to start an avalanche.

After getting to the bottom of the off piste you arrive at the mountain path to the Vihren Hut. In fresh powder I imagine this would be a long walk. After other people have compressed the snow you can board most of the way with just an occasional scoot right back to the Alberta Tomba black run and to the Banderiza lifts for the next loop!
